The STAR method, made simple (with a real example)

A four-step structure for behavioural questions, so your answers stop rambling.
Behavioural questions start with 'Tell me about a time when...'. The easiest way to answer them clearly is STAR: Situation, Task, Action, Result.
Situation: set the scene in one or two sentences
Say where you were and what was happening. Keep it short. 'Last spring our launch date moved forward by two weeks.'
Task: say what you were responsible for
'I was leading the release and had to keep quality high with much less time.'
Action: explain what you did
This is the longest part. Use 'I', not 'we', so the interviewer hears your contribution. 'I split the work into three parts, asked each owner for a daily update, and cut two low-priority features.'
Result: finish with an outcome, ideally a number
'We shipped on time, and support tickets fell by 20 percent.' Many people forget this step, and it is the one that makes the answer memorable.
Practise it out loud
Reading a STAR answer is easy. Saying it smoothly under mild pressure is a skill, and it improves fast with a few rounds of practice.
