Answering 'Tell me about yourself' in under two minutes
2 October 2026 · 5 min read Sample
A simple present-past-future formula for the question every interviewer asks.
It sounds easy and trips up almost everyone. The trick is to treat it as a short pitch, not your life story.
Present: what you do now
One sentence on your current role and your strongest skill.
Past: how you got here
Two or three highlights that are relevant to this job, with one result you are proud of.
Future: why this role
End with what you want next and why this company fits. It naturally hands the conversation back to the interviewer.
Keep it under two minutes
Time yourself. If you run over, cut the oldest, least relevant part first.
